Mellanox Technologies has introduced the world’s first 40Gb Ethernet adapter solution for converged networks. Called the ConnectX-2 EN 40G, the new adapter card targets data centre applications where it will maximise the utilisation of the latest multi-core processors, achieve unprecedented Ethernet server and storage connectivity, and advance LAN and SAN unification efforts.

Today's data centres require more that 10 gigabytes-per-second networking in order to achieve to support the increasing networking demands of ‘virtualized’ environments and to enable true I/O consolidation. The Mellanox ConnectX-2 40G provides IT-managers of network-dependent organizations with a way to build the more efficient and streamlined data centres they require, whilst preserving their capital and operational investment in existing compute and storage infrastructure.

ConnectX-2 40G supports hardware-based visualisation I/O, including Single Root I/O Visualization (SR-IOV), and provides the features necessary to create a converged network to support Data Centre Bridging (DCB). Further, the adapter simplifies the implementation of Fibre-Channel-over-Ethernet (FCoE) and provides T11 Fibre Channel frame encapsulation support. The single-port ConnectX-2 EN 40G comes with one QSFP connector suitable for use with copper or optical cables, which ensures a high level of flexibility in use. The ConnectX-2 EN 40G supports stateless offloads and is fully compatible with standard TCP / UDP / IP stacks.

As part of Mellanox's portfolio of 10Gb Ethernet and InfiniBand adapters, ConnectX-2 EN 40G is supported by a full suite of software drivers for Microsoft Windows, Linux distributions, VMware and Citrix XEN Server.
