New PowerBlox High Voltage, High Current Step Down Converter

New PowerBlox™ High Voltage, High Current Step Down Converter

Featuring Optimised 12V Input Voltage Single Stage Conversion, a maximum current load of 2A and operating input voltage of up to 25V

The latest addition to Exar’s industry acclaimed PowerBlox™ family of high-voltage, high-current step-down regulators, XRP7657, is optimized for a 12V input voltage rail but is just as happy operating from the popular 5V and 24V power rails. The new non-synchronous voltage mode PWM step down converter addresses the need for smaller footprint and cost reduction in cost sensitive applications such as audio-video equipment like set-top boxes, telecom, computing peripherals and more generally distributed point of load conversions.

Reaching up to 94% efficiency in a compact “green” SOIC package, the XRP7657 operates at a fixed 420kHz switching frequency, allowing the use of small external components. The output voltage can be adjusted down to 0.8V with 2% accuracy via two external resistors, achievable from any single input voltage from 4.75V to 25V. Design flexibility is further increased thanks to an external type-III compensation for of any point-of-load supply. Built-in soft-start, current limit and thermal shutdown protection provide the XRP7657 with fail-safe operations.

According to Eric Pittana, Power Products director of marketing, the new 2A device is indicative of Exar’s continuous effort to provide designers with higher performing, cost effective solutions for point of load conversions: “With its wide input voltage range, the XRP7657 can be easily integrated into numerous distributed power architectures as well as reused in multiple designs with varying input. It complements our established and popular three, six, eight and twelve amp PowerBlox converters.

The XRP7657 is available now in volume quantities in a RoHS compliant, halogen free 8-pin SOIC package.
